Laser test: Acrylic Foam Tapes (tesa® ACXᵖˡᵘˢ)

Laser cutting of high-performance acrylic foam tapes

Material

Acrylic foam tapes provide extremely high bonding strength and are ideal for permanent, structural bonding. They compensate thermal expansion and help reduce stress between bonded parts. Thanks to their excellent resistance to weathering and UV exposure, they are suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. This assortment includes variants offering transparency, high initial tack, or exceptional durability. Typical applications include automotive assembly, electronics, and decorative elements.

  • tesa® ACXᵖˡᵘˢ 77811 Primerless Line
  • tesa® ACXᵖˡᵘˢ 7815 Black Line
  • tesa® ACXᵖˡᵘˢ 7066 High Adhesion
  • tesa® ACXᵖˡᵘˢ 7076 High Resistance
  • tesa® ACXᵖˡᵘˢ 7056 High Transparency
  • tesa® ACXᵖˡᵘˢ 92105 HiP – High initial Performance
  • tesa® 61053

Test setup

For the laser tests, a eurolaser M-800 laser cutting machine with a 100 W or 200 W CO₂ laser was used. The objective was to evaluate the suitability of industrial and high-performance adhesive tapes for laser cutting and to achieve precise, clean and process-reliable cut edges, even for customised contours.

Result

All tested materials are suitable for cutting with laser cutting machines; the types tesa® 92105 HiP and tesa® ACXᵖˡᵘˢ 77811 were even rated as excellently suitable. Thanks to the contact-free processing, the adhesive layers remain undamaged, with no delamination or smoke marks. This makes the eurolaser cutting machine an efficient and precise solution for processing foamed acrylic in demanding industries.

Advantages

Contact-free processing – no adhesion of adhesive residues.

No material fixing required thanks to the vacuum table.

No tool wear and no cleaning required.

Precise, delicate and repeatable cuts.

Highest cutting quality with easy part removal.

Laser test: Foam Tapes

Laser cutting of polyethylene foam adhesive tapes

Material

Foam tapes are highly adaptable and reliably compensate for surface irregularities. They combine strong adhesion with excellent cushioning and shock absorption properties. Their ability to fill gaps ensures secure sealing and reduces vibrations. When compressed, they form a watertight barrier while remaining flexible enough to seal uneven surfaces effectively. Typical applications include furniture manufacturing, construction, and decorative bonding.

  • tesa® 62932
  • tesa® 62904
  • tesa® 62510
  • tesa® 4952

Test setup

The tests were carried out on a eurolaser M-800 laser cutting machine with a Shuttle Table System and a 200 W CO₂ laser. The objective was to evaluate the cutting capability of PE foam adhesive tapes and to determine cutting quality across different contour geometries.

Result

All tested foam adhesive tapes were rated as excellently suitable for laser cutting. The laser cutting machine enabled precise, clean edges without material damage. Thanks to the contact-free processing, no adhesive residues build up on the tool, ensuring consistently high cutting quality over time. This makes eurolaser laser cutting machines a reliable solution for processing PE foam adhesive tapes.

Advantages

Exact, clean cut edges.

No tool contamination from adhesive residues.

Flexible cutting of customised contours.

Highest precision with repeatable cuts.

Efficient processing even for series production.

Laser test: Film Tapes

Laser cutting of thin film tapes

Material

Film tapes are thin, flexible, and offer high transparency for discreet bonding solutions. Combined with an acrylic adhesive, they ensure strong and durable adhesion on smooth surfaces. They feature excellent temperature resistance and are ideal for laminating and applications requiring minimal material thickness. They are resistant to chemicals and aging, making them suitable for demanding environments. Typical applications include electronics, display assembly, and decorative surfaces.

  • tesa® 4953
  • tesa® 4965 Original Next Gen
  • tesa® 4965

Test setup

The tests were carried out on a eurolaser M-800 laser cutting machine with a Shuttle Table System and a 200 W CO₂ laser. The objective was to evaluate the laser suitability of thin film adhesive tapes and to achieve precise, clean and process-reliable cut edges, even for very fine contours.

Result

Both adhesive tapes tested were rated as excellently suitable. Laser cutting produced clean, smooth edges without smoke marks, delamination or adhesive residues. Even with delicate structures, the material properties remained fully intact.

Advantages

Clean, precise cut edges.

No adhesive residues on the tool.

No tool wear or resharpening required.

Precisely repeatable results for series production and prototypes.

Ideal for thin, transparent materials.

Laser test: Non-Woven Tapes

Laser cutting of nonwoven-based adhesive tapes

Material

Non-Woven tapes are soft and conformable, allowing them to adapt perfectly to textured and uneven surfaces. They provide good shear strength and are suitable for permanent bonding on challenging substrates. These tapes are particularly useful in applications where flexibility and adaptability are essential. Typical uses include furniture manufacturing, textile processing, and decorative applications.

Laser test: Surface Protection Tapes

Laser cutting of surface protection tapes

Material

Surface protection tapes reliably protect sensitive surfaces from scratches, dust, and mechanical damage. They are easy to apply and can be removed without leaving residue. In addition to temporary protection solutions, permanent surface protection films such as tesa® 52995 are available for long-term protection in demanding applications. These films offer high resistance to chemicals, moisture, and UV radiation, making them suitable for industrial processes or heavily used surfaces. Typical applications include transport, storage, processing, and permanent protection of high-value materials.

  • tesa® 7133
  • tesa® 52995 (permanent protection film)

Test setup

The laser test was carried out on a eurolaser M-800 laser cutting machine with a 200 W CO₂ laser source and a Shuttle Table System. The material was placed flat as sheet stock. The objective was to achieve precise cutting while maintaining the adhesive properties. The use of a power-adjusted vacuum table ensured secure fixation of the lightweight tape.

Result

tesa® surface protection tapes proved to be excellently suitable for laser processing. The cut edges were smooth and precise, with no smoke marks or material deformation. The adhesive function remained fully intact. The contact-free processing enabled highly accurate and efficient production – ideal for masking applications with high quality requirements.
