Questions about laser cutting acrylic

Comparison of cast (GS) and extruded (XT) acrylic in CO₂ laser processing: GS with burr-free edge, XT with precise dimensional accuracy

Cast acrylic (GS) offers burr-free cutting edges and high-contrast engraving results when processed with a CO₂ laser. Extruded acrylic (XT), on the other hand, scores points with lower thickness tolerances for more precise dimensions and greater cost-effectiveness in series production.

Laser-cut thick acrylic with crystal-clear, smooth cut edges and precise inner contours

Yes, eurolaser CO₂ laser machines can be used to cut acrylic sheets up to 30 mm thick with precision. The result is crystal-clear, smooth cut edges and precisely executed inner contours – without any post-processing.

The software already contains optimised processing parameters for many materials. The results of acrylic cutting can be further refined by specifically adjusting the laser power and cutting speed.

When cutting thick acrylic glass from 20 mm, several aspects should be considered to achieve optimum cutting quality:

  1. Laser power: High laser power (200–650 watts) enables more precise and faster cuts.
  2. Compressed air: Reduced compressed air prevents milky cut edges, while minimal purge air protects the lens.
  3. Extraction technology: Optimised extraction with spacers reduces gas concentration and distributes excess energy.
  4. Focus point: The focus point should be centred in the material to ensure straight cut edges.
  5. Protective film: The protective film protects against heat, discolouration and burns during cutting.
Machine sizes of the eurolaser XL-Line

Our laser machines offer table sizes ranging from 830 mm to 3,200 mm in width – ideal for any sheet size. The Laser Cutter XL-1200 is perfect for 1/3 sheets, the Laser Cutter XL-1600 for 1/2 acrylic sheets, and the XL-3200 for full sheets.

Printed acrylic sheet with registration marks for precise camera detection in laser cutting processes

Yes, thanks to eurolaser's optical recognition system, contours can be cut precisely along the print motifs. Even with white-backed acrylic glass, camera recognition ensures exact alignment and clean cut edges – without any smoke residue.

Further details on camera recognition

Close-up of a laser-engraved and laser-cut acrylic panel with fine engraving details and clean cut edges

Yes, they can produce vector engravings, image engravings and relief engravings. Even engravings on full-format plates are possible.

Further details on laser engraving

Comparison of two acrylic edges: left with bubbles caused by moisture, right smooth edge due to optimal storage

The storage of acrylic glass has a significant impact on the cut edge: moisture can cause bubbles or a milky film when cutting, while direct sunlight can damage the protective film. Acrylic should therefore be stored in a dry, well-ventilated place at around 15 °C and protected from sunlight. Storing it for too long can also cause the protective film to shrink and render the material unusable.

Acrylic is known under the following material names

Polymethyl methacrylate, PMMA, PLEXIGLAS®, PERSPEX®, CRYLUX®, CRYLON®, Marcryl FS, ALTUGLASTM, ACRYLITE®, Lucryl, ACRYLITE®, TroGlass, Madreperla®, Plazit®, Quinn®, Oroglas®, Plaskolite®, Biacryl, Conacryl, Deglas, Diakon, Friacryl, Hesaglas, Hesalit, Hesalitglas, Limacryl, PerClax, Vitroflex
