eurolaser tested the following materials from Sekisui Alveo on the laser cutting systems:

Laser test: Alveolit

Laser cutting of closed-cell polyolefin foam

Material

Alveolit is a physically cross-linked, closed-cell polyolefin foam with a foamed skin on both sides. The material features a fine, homogeneous cell structure and offers excellent thermoplastic properties, particularly in vacuum forming and press forming applications. Typical applications include sealing, insulation, packaging, automotive manufacturing and construction. The following foam grades were tested:

  • Alveolit TE 1503 67 kg/m³
  • Alveolit TP LPM 2 1503
  • Alveolit TA 3006 33 kg/m³

Test setup

The laser test was carried out on a eurolaser M-800 laser cutting machine with a 200 W CO2 laser and Shuttle Table. The interchangeable material carrier enabled uninterrupted operation through parallel loading and unloading during the cutting process.

Result

Alveolit can be cut cleanly and precisely. The cut edges were smooth, without scorching or residue. Even complex shapes were implemented with high precision. The material is excellently suitable for laser processing.

Advantages

Clean and intricate cut edges without post-processing

High flexibility in contour design

Surface engraving possible in a single operation

No compression during cutting

No drying process required after processing

Laser test: Alveolen

Laser cutting of closed-cell polyolefin foam

Material

Alveolen is a physically cross-linked, closed-cell polyolefin foam with a fine cell structure and a smooth, scratch-resistant surface. It features excellent thermoplastic properties and is ideally suited for applications in the footwear industry, packaging, construction as well as the automotive and transport sectors. Thanks to its low water absorption, high weather resistance and chemical inertness, it offers versatile application possibilities. The following foam grades were tested:

  • Alveolen NT 2504 40 kg/m³
  • Alveolen NEE 2506 40 kg/m³
  • Alveolen NA 0605 167 kg/m³
  • Alveolen NP FRG 2905.5 35 kg/m³
  • Alveolen NA 3605 28 kg/m³
  • Alveolen NP FRG 2005 50 kg/m³

Test setup

The test was carried out using a 200 W CO2 laser on a eurolaser M-800 laser cutting machine. The integrated Shuttle Table enabled uninterrupted operation through simultaneous cutting and material changeover.

Result

The laser test showed: Alveolen is excellently suitable for CO2 laser processing. The cut edges were clean and precise, and no post-processing was required. Thanks to contactless processing, neither distortion nor compression occurred. The high contour flexibility and the possibility of simultaneous engraving offer additional efficiency advantages.
