Dumico B.V., Netherlands

Dumico B.V., based in the Netherlands, is a manufacturer primarily operating in Europe specialising in sight glasses and mica products. The company has been established since 1983, and its name is an abbreviation of Dutch Mica Company. In addition to high-quality products related to mica and micanite in all variants for electrical or thermal insulation, Dumico also offers its customers comprehensive consultancy.

eurolaser has tested the following materials from Dumico on its laser cutting machines:

Lasertest: Micanite

Laser cutting of synthetic mica sheets

Material:

Micanite is an engineered mica material consisting of approximately 90% natural mica and around 10% binder. The material is chemically inert, electrically insulating, and resistant to heat and pressure. Due to its stability and consistent material quality, micanite is frequently used as an insulation material, for example in e-mobility applications for batteries or in generators for wind turbines.

Test setup:

The laser test was carried out on an XL-1600 laser cutting machine equipped with a 450 W CO₂ laser source. A honeycomb table concept was used, whose cellular structure ensures stable material support and effective extraction. The aim of the test was to evaluate micanite sheets of various thicknesses in terms of cuttability, cut edge quality and potential residues.

Result

Micanite sheets with thicknesses between 0.3 mm and 1.0 mm could be processed with very high cut quality. The contactless laser process produced clean, burr-free cut edges without particle chipping. The cutting process was dust-free and required no cleaning. Material thicknesses of up to approx. 2.0 mm can be processed very well, while a burr may occur at 3.0–8.0 mm, which can, however, be easily reworked. Micanite with a thickness of more than 8.0 mm cannot be cut on eurolaser systems.
