How do I measure laser power correctly?

Only trust meaningful data

Every new laser when put into use offers a considerable power surplus, especially in the first few months. Some laser suppliers exploit just such power data (maximum laser power) in the hope of gaining a competitive edge. In our opinion, this data is neither meaningful nor reliable.

We are dealing here with a ‘possible power’ which can be achieved at most while the device is still new and in addition can vary significantly from one product to another within one series. eurolaser only ever uses top quality laser beam sources. The high standard we demand is the determining factor for our supplies of laser beam sources.

Sophisticated measuring processes are used not only to check the laser power, but also the beam quality before the laser is even installed in our system technology. We always take the guaranteed power as a basis, because this is a figure that the user can rely on for many years to come. Fair consultation and sampling that is realistic and has a practical orientation are results that built up trust in the technology.

What you should know so you can make a comparison

Laser power for material processing lasers is normally given in W [Watt = energy per time unit] However, indication of the effective power is not standardised and so often cannot be compared directly in offers from different system manufactures.

So be very careful when selecting the right laser source!

Different power data concerning ...

  • nominal laser power
  • maximum laser power
  • peak power
  • guaranteed laser power
  • pulse power
  • CW mode (continuous wave)

... characterise among other things the laser beam source.

The guaranteed laser power is a reliable figure for eurolaser, in addition to the nominal power, it is a meaningful indication that can be used to set the application parameters. Permissible tolerance is another useful indication for high demands on quality.

This makes production results measurable, comparable and most especially reproducible!

Fair consultation and sampling that is realistic and has a practical orientation are results that built up trust in the technology.
