Laser cutting of adhesive films with natural surface materials

Organoid Natural Surfaces is a product line of the Avery Dennison Corporation in collaboration with Organoid Technologies GmbH. The polyester carrier film is coated with various trimmings made from regionally produced natural raw materials, which, according to the manufacturer, are intended to appeal to almost all the senses. The trimmings include, for example, moss, hay and rose petals. The unusual materials, extraordinary in look, feel and smell, are designed for use in hotels, offices or even homes. As one of the first processors of this material, we have tested how well the natural adhesive foils can be processed by laser.

The goal of the laser test:

Cutting of very small contours while maintaining the highest aesthetic standards

We tested different variants of Organoid Natural Surfaces from Avery Dennison for processing with our laser cutters. In consultation, we paid attention to the following requirements:

  • Best possible cutting quality even with the smallest contours
  • Smoke-free cutting results that meet the highest aethetic standards
  • Avoidance of double lines in the cutting corners (0-nesting)
  • Clean machining process without adhesive residues on tool or machine
  • Easy removal of parts after the cutting process

Organoid Natural Surfaces from Avery Dennison - excellent for laser processing

We have tested nine variants of Organoid Natural Surfaces from Avery Dennison in detail and achieved overall perfect cutting results. For this reason, we award the rating “excellently suitable” for laser cutting ability. Even small contours could be cut cleanly without leaving any residue on the tool or machine. The cut contours were absolutely free of smokes and showed no discoloration. Thanks to the excellent vacuum formation on the table, there is no need to clamp or fix the material. This saves time in processing. Unlike other tools, the laser shows no signs of wear and operates with consistently high cutting quality. During the non-contact, force-free processing, any slippage or material distortion is prevented. With our sophisticated extraction concept, including optimized table and head extraction, we can cut without leaving any residue and there is no buildup on the material or the machine – so there is no need for reworking or cleaning.
