The benefits of cutting aramid fibres with CO₂ lasers:
- No tool wear
- Maximum precision and repeatability accuracy
- No material distortion during cutting
- Fast processing speed
Aramid-based composites are used mainly for components that are subjected to high stress, e.g. those needed for the construction of gliders.
Technically speaking aramids have a negative thermal expansion coefficient in the direction of the fibres, similar to that of carbon fibres. This means they become shorter and thicker when heated. Compared to carbon fibre reinforced plastics, these special textiles have a lower compressive resistance. However, their impact resistance is significantly higher and that is why they are very often used as safety shields for engine cowls.

Exact processing is of vital importance when manufacturing the parts for these highly complex technical components. And this of course is the reason why laser systems are often used as the ideal processing machines. In combination with the Conveyor System and its automatic material feed, the textiles can be processed directly from the roll.
In our example we have used an aramid fibre composite in which small metal fibres have been embedded. And as the example shows, eurolaser systems can cut such difficult materials easily and accurately.
