Material information for laser cutting of multiplex (MPX):

Multiplex boards are classed as solid wood boards and consist of at least five layers of veneer of the same thickness. They are sturdy and form stable and are also referred to as veneer plywood boards. The boards made mostly of beech, birch, spruce and maple are 0.8 – 2.5 mm thick. The thickness of the middle layers varies depending on the required overall thickness and appearance. The individual veneers are crossed pressed and glued with their grains at right angles to each other using adhesives or waterproof glue (phenolic resin, phenol resorcin, or resorcin and melamine resin) The type of bonding determines the subsequent use of the boards and is not indicated in the description of the boards. It has also influence on the laser cutting. Efficient CO₂ laser technology is increasingly be used for processing. Due to the thermal process during laser cutting, there are also characteristics, such as moisture content, density, glue, oil and resin content which represent important factors for the quality and speed of the laser cut.
